Is It Over Yet?

image

It hasn’t even been a month- think about that for a minute. IT HASN’T EVEN BEEN A MONTH, and the scandal of this administration continues to exhaust and infuriate the public at all new levels EVERYDAY. Logging into Twitter, biting your nails, timidly glancing at the screen to read the ‘very smart’ new message the POTUS has so graciously blessed us with on his personal account and then inevitably deflate into a pile of sadness and doubt at his pettiness.

We’re living in a world of alternative facts and chosen realities, so it’s hard to really make sense of anything or even have civilized conversations when your sources of information are referred to as ‘fake news.’ I mean, the president is taking time out of his day to chastise the very entities that are for the most part just doing their job, which brings me to the circus that was a press conference yesterday.

Seeing how he presented himself was not only disheartening, but embarrassing. Having a political figure behave like a child, insulting reporters and their stations on live television was like watching an absurdist play, but IT WAS REAL. His blatant disregard for minor courtesy is not the only thing one of the many things that truly bothers me. The way he handles questions about the country’s seemingly growing divide is devastating. He basically said that all of these racist provocations are a result of the left perpetuating these attacks in his name, when we all know these people who are drawing swastikas and yelling obscenities at POC are all too real and feeling embolden by President (I shudder writing that) Trump’s lack of acknowledgement or care really for the spiteful language he uses DAILY.

Not to mention the way he spoke to April Ryan, a White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, when she asked if he made any plans to involve the Black Caucus in his decision-making for his plan on developing inner cities. He proceeded to ask her if she knew them and if she wanted to set up a meeting, and she responded, “No, I’m just a reporter,” instead of a more apropos, “You’re an incompetent racist, bigoted fool, of course I can’t set up that meeting. Contrary to your belief, not all of us black people know each other you piece of sh*t.” In case you missed this incredibly uncomfortably exchange, you can watch it on one of the few networks that have not been accused of reporting ‘fake news.’ Here’s a piece ABC did on this unbelievable interaction. Brace yourself.

Back to President (*faints on keyboard, wakes up*) Trump’s provocative dismissal of responsibility for his ‘fans.’ It’s reminiscent of the way some white people fear or deny that racism exists, so instead of confronting reality, they push the blame elsewhere and/or get defensive. The way he handled that question about the uptick of anti-semitic crime (take a look here if you dare) from Jake Turx, a Jewish reporter with Ami Magazine was exactly that. He even told the reporter to ‘sit down,’ and called him a ‘liar!’ That’s right, folks, we’re dealing with someone so completely unhinged that he cannot face the fact that even though this country has been divided for years, it’s his direct election to power that has tipped the tension into the direction of active violence. Instead of being self reflective and understanding of the fear that anyone who isn’t a rich anglo-saxon male might harbor is real, he rails against the reporter as if the reporter is the enemy and offers absolutely no solace or solution for these violent acts, confirming, to everyone’s terror, that he is willfully out of touch. Can you call him blissfully ignorant? I can’t imagine blissful being used to describe him in any way.

I remember hearing or reading something about the kinds of qualities necessary to make a successful or at least effective president, and one of the traits is self-awareness, which President (*rolls around, spins in circles, sits back down*) Trump severely lacks. I don’t know if he’s aware anyone else is around him really. I imagine all he sees when he closes his eyes is himself, not even darkness.

The way he refuses to address the division in constructive ways, whines about ‘hard questions,’ blames the media for his mistakes is terrifying to think about when you know he has access to nuclear codes and doesn’t seem to think anything he does is wrong. Troubling doesn’t even begin to describe his actions. We need to ban together more than ever to stop the insanity. I just. I just hope we can.

Help Me Understand

It has been 70 days since the most depressing presidential election I’ve ever experienced and there has been no reprieve from the glaringly unstable president elect’s ability to frighten and disappoint on a large scale.

As his inauguration quickly approaches to the utter surprise and disgust of most of the country, people are continuing to battle for their voice and remain angry in protest to, frankly, TRY to stand up against a lying racist no, def racist, fascist narcissist that is relentlessly threatening our freedoms. In all of this, he still has a vicious staunch following that believe his lies so wholeheartedly that any hint of dissension unleashes a reign of despicable fury, a litany of personal insults that makes you question whether or not this aggression is coming from something deeper than a desire to defend an ideal, but is really a culmination of compounded hatred and blind selfishness that leads to the hapless belief in policies in direct opposition to their own interests. Not to mention these assaults are usually led by the president elect.

I listened to a podcast today, (shout out to Pod Save America!) and was able to (kind of) understand where some of this frustration comes from. There can be an air of superiority that liberals have when it comes to discussing conservatives that can be off-putting and stratifying. Calling Trump supporters classless and stupid are not great ways to garner traction to change minds, but then again, I guess that’s not really the point at this juncture. The right has alarmingly made up its mind to house and support white supremacy, and ignore the plea of thousands to rethink disrupting Obamacare- just to name a few indiscretions. At this point, the priority is to protect the republic and defend ourselves from the inevitable onslaught of bigotry that is going to find its way into law. A vast majority of the country has made it abundantly clear that we will not walk quietly into the night, while this incoming administration attempts to steamroll, crush, and diminish our rights.

There’s just a piece of me that wants to believe people can change. In the right context, under the right circumstances, truth can prevail against a despot. Alas, this election has chipped away at that hope and I am resigned to believe no amount of fact or the witness of actual events will change the minds of the white America that is so wrapped up in an identity that is based on ostracizing and belittling “The Other” while turning a blind eye to an emerging government that cares nothing to little about democracy (or their wellbeing) and everything about money.

To those people who will seemingly never see the dark side of this presidency:

How can you so intensely follow someone who wants to MAGA for the upper class no matter the cost to the rest of the American people? Why can’t you see you’re being duped?

But I Can’t Help It.

Though I am immensely happy with the way so many Americans are mobilizing against Trump I can’t help but to feel a little slighted by the fact this national upset is what’s prompting this cataclysmic reaction to upend the country. The kind of racism/misogyny The Donald used to incite crowds to violence is the very same racism/misogyny that has been pulsing through America for years, no matter who was president. These claims of surprise and upset are warranted for those who weren’t living under the burden of dealing with prejudice every day, but it still calls attention to how oblivious or comfortable the country has been with the plight of minority groups for centuries. We’ve become so accustomed to not expect serious change to this white supremacist power system because challenging it without the support of the entire country seemed futile.

It took an incredible upset to really wake this country up and I get that but it’s still irritating to hear, “I can’t believe the country would do this” or “How are this many people so racist/selfish?” This election’s outcome really calls attention to white privilege. I can’t help but to think this much protesting/outrage would definitely not have happened if Clinton got elected. I do believe the country was moving in the direction of, “Wait our entire system is inherently flawed,” but our system has been flawed as long as this country has been a country and it all started with the settlers and their decimation of the Indians. The horror and ugliness continues and manifests itself in new and frightening ways still.

How we as a country so loftily ignored centuries of slavery, over a decade of internment camps, countless deaths of civilians in other countries in the name of freedom (that number rises everyday), and are finally now aghast at the culmination of this history is for lack of better words intensely frustrating.

I was distraught after the election results. For a second I thought we were moving in a more progressive direction, more inclusive and that it would be a slow moving process but that it was starting. Instead, I was in awe of the amount of red states as the night of the election went on, but in retrospect, it shouldn’t have been surprising. Everyone wants to blame all these various factors for the reality we’re living in but honestly this is the real America. We’re finally facing all of the deep rooted pain and suffering that’s been plaguing minorities (this includes anyone who’s not a straight white Christian American male) and I’m happy but there’s also a pang of sadness mixed in there.

Regardless of these sad feelings, I am crazy excited about the way millions of Americans are protesting and shouting from the rooftops to let the establishment know, NO MORE. There are a lot of people who knew this country couldn’t keep going in the direction it’s been going, and this the glaring kick in the ass we needed to really make America great. Period. NOT AGAIN. AMERICA HAS NEVER BEEN GREAT FOR EVERYONE. I seriously hope some things come out of this colossal change in perspective, including more diverse views on the news, a reexamination of our Justice system, holding officials accountable for decisions they make that harm countless innocent people in other countries, a national acknowledgement that racial socio-economic inequality is a direct result of slavery, more programs to remedy this issue, and finally begin making steps to close the unbelievable wealth gap and recognize the undeniable classism that is rampant in our society.

Again, I am happy about this amazing movement, but let’s not forget our history this time, and really take into consideration the hundreds of years that have led us here.

And let’s keep having these uncomfortable conversations. They’re terrifying and so completely necessary to continue evolving.

I can’t...

It’s almost 3:30am and I’m literally in shock.

I’ve never experienced this before. Feelings raging beneath the surface while I sit and listen calmly as the news informs the world that Hillary is not receiving the votes in the states predicted and Trump is making a surprising jump in final counts.

I left the bar feeling numb. I’m still not quite sure I feel anything now, but I do know I can’t sleep and not one of the three presidential elections I’ve voted in has left me this restless and nervous.

Now, it’s not that I’m feeling nothing, I guess. It’s more like I’m feeling so many things at once, it’s impossible to process, so instead, it’s more a steady hum behind my eyes instead of an explosive wave crashing over my body.

This country that I struggled to care for and accept has blatantly made a statement that it certainly does not accept me because its vast majority has elected someone who has unapologetically demonized and marginalized minorities like me with gusto. He has flippantly made comments about women that give us all flashbacks to the countless times we’ve been disrespected and patronized by men, but I don’t have to go through all of the ways in which he is unfit to be president because it doesn’t matter anymore. He is.

This country built on immigrants and slaves with its sordid history of oppression and devastating violence against Native Americans has selected a leader that completely ignores this history and uses fear and manipulation to encourage hatred and perpetuate bigotry. There are an overwhelming amount of people who honestly feel his racist rhetoric is absolute truth, and that is horrifying for me as a woman of color. It’s scary because people with these preconceived notions about who I am and don’t feel I deserve to be treated with respect and dignity are not only in the midwest but all over this country. And now their ideas have been validated by the election of this dangerous, clueless, rotten and moldy discarded orange peel.

I can’t even write anymore, I’m so devastated. I just want to know how we move forward from here. How can we move this country into the future after its reverted back so many years to the good ol’ days and now actually make America great again?

Because right now, a lot of us are scared. A lot of us don’t feel safe, but we are also not going to give up, because together we can accomplish great things.

Sigh. I still can’t believe it’s over folks, and the winner is a douche-bag doozy.

Okay, time to attempt sleep.

But one more thing before I go. I keep seeing these headlines about Van Jones “near tears” on CNN and I just want to say I think he was very composed and did not falter while expressing his very valid thoughts on what a Trump presidency meant for people of color and how it might be confusing to explain to your 6 year old that even a “mean bully” could get elected president.

I want someone to explain to me how this happened like I was 6. What a nightmare. WHAT A NIGHTMARE.

Can I just hibernate for 4 years?

United We Stand?

While the primaries continue to rage on with every candidate vying for attention and making choices to get their campaign promises to more ears, there is still this huge elephant in the room that is going to be a challenge for whoever wins this race. That challenge? Bringing people together.

Let’s face it. We’ve all pretty much given up on anyone who has even hinted at voting for Trump and have witnessed and read the biting criticism coming from democrats and republicans alike who ardently disagree with his rhetoric. There is nothing wrong with this. However, it seems as though, among the violence and outright insanity, we tend to forget that on the other side of the proverbial fence are people who are feeling disenfranchised and have taken solace in a candidate that knows little to nothing about government but is masterful at manipulation and the art of scare tactics.

There is a video circulating that caught my attention yesterday that touches upon my feelings about Trump supporters.

HOWEVER, there is a whole other side of me that is more scared than anything that the people who are blindly supporting this tyrant are not going to just go away after the primaries or even after the general election. Because, even though I do understand there are a number of people who are clinging to Trump because they believe he is going to “change things,” there are also a majority of people who want to “Make America Great Again,” who are just downright racist, sexist, homophobic, and unwilling to change their minds about backwards beliefs. My question is how are democrats going to unite these people who are so steadfast in believing the very political ideals that are blatantly working against them? I will never understand that. Why would a selfish millionaire give a sh*t about the middle class?!

Anyway, as I said before, I understand people clinging onto what they want believe will change their situation, but why him?! How would this work?! Help me understand. Anybody.
